Headteacher Update

Headteacher update – 9th May 2018

Good morning. I hope you have been enjoying the recent weather. How lovely to see the sun! I am trying to reduce email overload and direct your attention to the school website for further details of events which are of interest to you.

The school website is our main communication tool. I recommend using the search function to quickly locate what you are looking for.

Nursery Thanks to our gardening fairies who once more worked their magic in our nursery grounds. Despite the heatwave this small band of merry volunteers laid bark play surface and transformed a corner of the nursery garden. The nursery team in the inset day worked further on developing loose parts play provision and reorganised the playroom indoors and out to promote enquiry learning through play.

Pitch fundraising

Our school pitch is desperately in need of significant works. We have a quote for around £15,000 to strip, sort drainage, resurface and seed/lay a new grass pitch. The current pitch surface is a nightmare with quagmire and deep ruts negatively affecting quality of play surface. We have decided against Astro turf as too expensive and would require fencing off which is not the way that the kids games play apparently! There tends to be multi games going on at once. My pupil council were aghast when I suggested installing proper goals.

A properly maintained grass pitch would allow the kids to play at break times and also to be used as training for our school team games and matches beyond the school day. During class PE lessons, an improved pitch surface would positively impact on the range of outdoor sports our pupils participate locally in. The council may make a contribution towards some of this £15K. The CPSC are hoping to help us raise some funds to go with the other fundraising to add to school resources. The brilliant work the CPSC do in organising school events such as discos, fair and raffles not only help build community whilst offering our families fun activities, they also help with raising funds to enhance the learning experience at Cramond for all pupils.

Boat repairs. We are still trying to secure a contractor to undertake this specialised work. Be assured we are doing all we can to progress this.

New classroom units August 2018

We look forward to the double classroom unit being installed at the end of May ready for P7 in August. The double classroom is open planned with carefully designed interior to allow an exciting and dynamic learning environment for P7. P5 and P6 will move into the previous 6/7 corridor.

P7 will be team taught by both teachers. The current P6 class groupings will continue in P7 for registration purposes only. The children will then be taught by both teachers throughout the day in various group arrangements. We look forward to sharing details of this with you. The children will benefit from a range of seating, learning and teaching styles. Exciting times ahead.

Parking will be suspended during building works from end of May. The units are delivered, prefabricated at the start of the holidays. During works, there will be some temporary change to routes round school which we will inform you of. It will definitely be worth it. The plans look amazing!

The staff face considerable challenge ahead as we move furniture and resources in preparation for the new session. We have extra furniture at the moment and will be relocating many items. Bear with us in these coming few weeks. We expect to fill a skip or two!

We will be undertaking some simple painting of woodwork and low walls in a few rooms. In the past we have benefited hugely from company volunteers groups. If this is something your workplace would like to be involved in we have a number of small projects across the school year we would happily involve you in. Please contact myself, Helen Donaldson, in the first instance.

Class organisation

Please let us know if your child is not returning to Cramond in August. Demands on places at Cramond are high. It helps us manage waiting lists when we know where we may have spaces.

We are consulting with nursery & P1 parents regarding new class groupings for next session. Teachers / classes will be finalised & shared by the end of May.

End of session progress reports

These will be issued in purple reporting folders in early June. Please sign and return these. When your child leaves Cramond they are given these to keep.

School Car Park & car park gates are for VEHICLE access/entry only! Pupils and parents should not walk or cycle through this.

During building works all cycling storage is relocated to internal courtyard.

Access via metal gate by P7 doors.

Any prizes for our Grand school raffle run in June by CPSC? Please let Helen Donaldson know. We look forward to drawing it on the 15th June at our Grand Café. You are all invited!

best wishes Helen Donaldson
