Supporting Learners

Inclusion & Support for Learning at Cramond

Cramond Cares. Our values of Respect, Excellence, Equality and Kindness sit at the heart of everything we do. We are an inclusive school where every child is known, valued and supported to thrive as a learner and as a person.

Grounded in GIRFEC (Getting It Right for Every Child) and the SHANARRI wellbeing indicators (Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible, Included), we work in partnership with families to remove barriers, build on strengths and ensure high-quality learning for all. Our approach aligns with HGIOS4 (notably QIs 2.1, 2.3, 2.4, 3.1 and 3.2) and Edinburgh’s evolving Additional Support for Learning model within our Learning Community.

How support works

We use a clear, staged approach so help is timely, proportionate and effective:

• Universal – good for all

High-quality teaching, clear routines, feedback for progress, digital tools (1:1 iPads), play and outdoor learning, dyslexia-friendly practice, and a nurturing ethos in every class.

• Targeted – necessary for some

Short-term supports such as small-group interventions in literacy, numeracy and wellbeing; EAL support; assistive technology; sensory regulation options and structured social/emotional groups.

• Individual – essential for a few

Tailored plans co-designed with families and partners (e.g., Educational Psychologist, ASL teachers, EAL teacher, Pupil Support Officer, health and social care). We agree outcomes, strategies and review dates together.

Wellbeing first

Children’s voices shape their plans. Staff use SHANARRI to notice needs early, celebrate strengths and track wellbeing over time. Our inclusive environment includes calm, sensory-aware spaces and an evolving outdoor provision that supports regulation, gross-motor development and readiness to learn.

Working in partnership

Parents/carers are key partners. We communicate clearly, share targets and next steps, and agree how home and school will work together. We also collaborate across our Learning Community to coordinate specialist support where needed.

Keeping an eye on impact

Using HGIOS4, class assessment, wellbeing check-ins and learner conversations, we regularly review what works for each child and adjust support quickly so every learner makes strong progress.

If you have a concern or would like to discuss support for your child, please contact the school office admin@cramond.edin.sch.uk to speak with the Class Teacher or a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Together, we’ll get it right.
