Outdoor Learning & Play

Learning Outdoors & Our Place at Cramond

At Cramond, we believe the outdoors is a powerful and inspiring space for learning. Our playground, woodland, garden and wider community offer children opportunities to explore, create and connect with the natural world. Learning outdoors helps develop curiosity, resilience, teamwork and wellbeing. All central to our Cramond Cares values.

Our Place Playground

Our playground is more than a break-time space – it is an extension of our classrooms. We are committed to developing “Our Place” into a safe, stimulating and inclusive environment where children can play, learn and thrive. Plans are already underway for an exciting new trim trail and play equipment, designed to encourage climbing, balancing, jumping and gross-motor development. This will sit alongside sensory and social spaces that support regulation, friendship and creativity.

We work in close partnership with the Cramond Parent & Staff Council (CPSC), whose dedicated Gardening & Grounds volunteers help us keep our outdoor spaces attractive, sustainable and well-cared for. Families are warmly encouraged to get involved.

Outdoor Learning

Every class has opportunities to learn outdoors each week, with progression carefully planned across the school. From outdoor maths trails and science investigations, to storytelling, expressive arts and health & wellbeing activities. Children experience the curriculum in fresh and engaging ways.

Sustainability at Cramond

Cramond is proud to hold the Eco Schools Green Flag Award, reflecting our strong commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility and pupil leadership. Children take an active role in caring for our grounds, improving biodiversity and learning how to live more sustainably.

By investing in our outdoor spaces, we are ensuring that children at Cramond enjoy a rich education that values nature, supports wellbeing and helps them develop the skills and confidence they need for the future.
